Multi-Map

Multi-Map is a versatile feature that allows you to view up to four map windows and two detached map windows at the same time. This is very useful when tracking different sets of aircraft or for viewing multiple geographical regions or airports simultaneously.

Detached map windows are best utilized for multi-monitor displays and support all of the properties of the embedded multi-map windows. The detached map windows appear in the Windows task bar on your desktop and while they can be minimized and maximized like any other window, it is important that you click on the map window to activate it before you are able to manipulate it. The active status is indicated in the View Information bar at the bottom of the window which will turn blue.

Each window has its own User Defined View. Therefore, from your standard user Defined View list, you can display up to four Views simultaneously, each in its own window. Each map window has an Information Bar at the bottom. The Information Bar indicates which window is active (light blue shading), the User Defined View name selected in the window, the aircraft counts (both total and those matching the current View filters) and the retrieval status of weather product (if any are selected in the map window’s View.

Every map window has full functional capabilities and can be manipulated (pan, zoom, right click, etc.) in the same manner as a single map window. In order to manipulate a map window it must be selected as the active window. This is done by simply clicking the mouse in the map window you want to make active. The Information Bar at the bottom of the window will change to a light blue shaded background to indicate the window is now active and can be manipulated.

Note  Some computers may experience a performance penalty when using this feature due to lack of sufficient processing power or memory.

Using Multi- Maps

The map modes can most easily be accessed via the Cursor toolbar. The map mode can also be changed by selecting one of the following modes from the Window menu.

Item

Description

Single Map

This option is the original single map view.

Dual Map (vertical)

This option splits the screen into two maps, as a side-by-side split screen.

Dual Map (horizontal)

This option splits the screen into two maps, one over the other in a split screen.

Tri Map (vertical)

This option splits the screen into three maps, the first or primary view to the left of the screen with the next two views one over the other to the right of the screen.

Tri Map (horizontal)

This option splits the screen into three maps, the first or primary view on top with the next two views side-by-side underneath.

Quad Map

Detached Map Window A

This option toggles detached map window A.

Detached Map Window B

This option toggles detached map window B.

Upon selecting the map mode, the Flight Explorer screen will change to reflect the new number and orientation of map windows. The first time you enable additional map windows, they will all have the Default View selected. You can choose any other View you like by activating the window and selecting a different View as described below. Map mode will be remembered between FE restarts.

Making a Map Window Active

To make any map window active, simply click any mouse button in that window. The Information Bar at the bottom of the window will change to a light blue background shading to indicate that the window is now active. All toolbars and tool windows (Quick View, My Fleet, etc.) will update to reflect the current View and setting in the newly activated map window.

Manipulating a Map Window

To manipulate a map window it must first be made active as described above. After that, you can manipulate the active map window EXACTLY as you are used to with single map mode. All of the mouse operations (pan, zoom, right click selection, hot tip pop-ups, etc.) are fully operational. All of the toolbars and tool windows (Quick View, My Fleet, etc.) are updated to reflect the active window settings. For example, to change the User Defined View in the active window, simply click on a new View in your Quick View bar.

Note  Any time a User Defined View is changed and saved in one map window, it will be updated in any other map window that View is also selected into.

Maintaining active window when changing to single map mode

To understand how FE relates Views to map windows by default, it is easiest to look at it as if there are always 4 map windows, each with its own User Defined View selected into it, and changing the map mode is simply displaying or hiding one or more of those 4 windows. So, by default, a map window’s selected View does not change as you switch between map modes, unless you explicitly select a new View into it. You can, however, choose to have your current active map window switch to window #1 when you transition from 2, 3 or 4 map windows back to single map window mode. To do this, select Options on the Tools Toolbar or menu, select User Defined View, and select Keep active view when switching to “single map” orientation. This setting replaces your single map View (map window 1) with the View from your active map window.
